In an episode of “Mondays with McElwee,” Dr. Tyler McElwee, a facial plastic surgeon in Houston, provided invaluable insights into the recovery process following facelift or neck lift procedures. Dr. McElwee addressed the question of recovery duration, highlighting the significant advancements observed in the field over the past two decades.

He addressed these dynamic changes in an Instagram video posted on the 19th of September (Episode 3), where he shared the remarkable shift from extended recovery periods of four to six weeks, where individuals had to conceal their absence with vacation excuses, to the current norm of a condensed 10 to 14-day recovery period characterized by increased social downtime and minor discomfort.

“Recovery following a facelift or neck lift typically spans 10 to 14 days, accompanied by mild discomfort. By this time, a social outing like a dinner engagement becomes feasible, marking a departure from prolonged seclusion once associated with post-operative healing.”

Discover the transformative evolution in facelift and neck lift recoveries! Don’t miss out—watch the full video below to learn how these advancements redefine your recovery experience.

“How long does it take to recover from a facelift or a neck lift?”

Now, it’s a great question, and a lot of strides have come in the last 20 or so years.

Gone are the days where it’s a 4-week, 6-week kind of situation where you’re stuck at home and have to tell everyone you went on a vacation. Nowadays, it’s about 10 to 14 days, more social downtime with some achiness and tightness, and that’s about it. The journey kind of goes like this: on post-op Day 1, you’ll have a little head wrap that we take off; it puts a little pressure on certain places, and then you’ll notice you’re swollen.

Then, as the next couple of days go on, by day 4 or 5, your swelling kind of peaks like a roller coaster, and after that, it just starts coming down. You’ll notice by days 10 to 12 or so that there’s a little bit of residual bruising and swelling left, but it is a dramatic and marked difference from just after surgery.

Usually, I tell patients around day 10 or 12 to book a candlelight dinner, go out; you can put on a little makeup that covers whatever little residual bruising is left, and no one at dinner is going to know you just had a facelift or neck lift. No one’s gonna know you had surgery, and that’s the general gist of recovery nowadays.
