Plastic surgery has been in use for centuries. There were reconstructive surgical techniques in India circa 800 BC. To say that it has come a long way is a bit of an understatement. Some of the most exciting advancements have to do with the use of lasers replacing scalpels. Scalpels still give the doctor better control, but lasers represent a fairly exciting technology. They can be used to resurface the skin. This means that they can eliminate fine lines and wrinkles around the eyelids and the mouth, replacing dermabrasion and causing much less stress to the skin.
Over the years, medical research has revealed a better understanding of skin and muscle, and anatomy in general. The primary goal of research in these areas is to create safer, more effective procedures. Refinements have allowed surgeons to perform multiple procedures during one surgery. For example, they may do a tummy tuck, liposuction, and breast augmentation under a single anesthetic.
According to Dr. Patrick Hsu, “the advances mean greater benefits to patients. We are constantly looking for methods to create safer more effective procedures. This ensures better results.” Dr. Hsu goes on to say, “safety is our greatest concern, and with each new innovation in technique, the procedure becomes safer.”
Another relatively new advancement is the return of silicone implants for breast augmentation procedures. After years of intense testing, it was determined that silicone implants are safe and effective. This is a welcome comeback for patients. Another procedure, liposuction has seen wonderful new techniques in recent years. Modern technologies including ultrasound and laser, combined with standard techniques have offered a decrease in recovery time and greatly improved results. This continued development has been groundbreaking and shows a lot of promise. Plastic surgeons using liposuction to sculpt and contour the body have taken the procedures almost to an art form.
Perhaps the most promising new developments are in the area of pain control. Recently, devices have been introduced to provide pain relief at the surgical site. These are called pain pumps and they have dramatically decreased recuperation time for cosmetic and reconstructive surgeries. Another promising development is the use of EXPAREL®, a new analgesic that is applied with a single injection for pain-free breast augmentation surgery. It is slowly released into the breasts after surgery for a 72-hour period. The results are reportedly remarkable.
Plastic surgery is a common and popular form of surgery. It is ingrained in our culture and has become mainstream. Costs have come down so that average people have the means to have needed procedures. These developments mean an improved experience and improved results for patients and surgeons alike.
