Candidates for Botox® & Dysport®

We use Botox® & Dysport® to treat a wide range of patients with moderate to severe facial lines. Any healthy adult, male or female, who is at least 18 years old and desires a more youthful appearance is a candidate and can receive Botox® & Dysport® treatment.

Some candidates who are not eligible for these treatments are those who:

  • are pregnant
  • have a history of botulinum toxin sensitivity
  • have a dairy allergy
  • are over 65 years of age

As a precaution, patients are advised to discontinue blood thinners, muscle relaxants, and other medications that may interact with the injections prior to treatment. The injections may also interact with certain medications that affect the muscles, such as anticholinergics used for Parkinson’s disease. Our doctors will also assess each patient’s skin thickness during a pre-treatment consultation to determine if they are a candidate for Botox® & Dysport®, as skin conditions can affect the effectiveness of the treatment.

Botox® & Dysport® with Top MPS Doctors

Botox® and Dysport® are injected into the facial muscles, blocking certain neurotransmitters to limit their ability to contract. This reduces the formation of wrinkles caused by frowning, raising the eyebrows, or blinking. There is minimal pain involved in these treatments, but topical numbing or ice can be used before the procedure.

A fine needle is used to inject small amounts of diluted Botox® or Dysport® into specific muscles. More than one area can be treated at the same time and can target specific problem areas, which are listed in the table below.

Results & Recovery

After Botox® or Dysport® treatment, patients can return to work immediately the next day. It is not recommended to lie on their back for 3-4 hours after the procedure to prevent the product from migrating to unwanted areas. It is also not advisable to engage in strenuous activities such as sports for at least 2-3 days.

Botox® and Dysport® are both FDA-approved treatments and are safe to administer when used correctly. Possible risks, complications and side effects of Botox® and Dysport®, may include:

  • Pain or swelling at the injection site
  • Headaches
  • Nausea
  • Sinus inflammation
  • Upper respiratory infection
  • Muscle weakness

All of these side effects are normal and a result of the body adjusting to the medication. These symptoms should disappear after a few days and our doctor will prescribe medication to relieve the discomfort.

The results of Botox® & Dysport® typically appear within a few days after the injection, but the full results may not be visible for 1-2 weeks or 3-5 months, depending on the treatment areas. By this time, any remaining swelling and bruising should be gone.

Our Doctors Answer Questions About Botox® & Dysport®

  1. Is Dysport® as good as Botox®?
Dysport® and Botox® injections contain the same active ingredient, botulinum toxin. Because of this, it is possible to combine and alternate the use of both products in specific areas of the body. Dysport® is not as concentrated as Botox®, and this provides patients with faster results. Ultimately the choice between either injectable is dependent on the patient’s needs and concerns.
  2. Can you switch between Botox® and Dysport®?
You can safely switch from either injectable. Both products are safe and can help you and your medical aesthetician determine which treatment works best with your body.
  3. Can you mix Dysport® and Botox®?
Depending on your aesthetic needs and the assessment of your doctor, it is possible to use both injectables within a single treatment in specific locations on your face.
  4. Does Dysport® last longer than Botox®?
The results from Dysport® typically manifest sooner. However, Botox® results have been proven to last a little longer.
  5. How many units of Dysport® are equal to Botox®?
An average of three Dysport® units is the equivalent of one unit of Botox®.
