Aging is inevitable, as are the signs that come along with it. As forehead wrinkles, crow’s feet, and frown lines begin to appear, it’s normal to feel apprehension when looking in the mirror. The areas around the eyes, forehead, and smile lines are where these telltale marks develop.

We at The Memorial Spa in Houston, TX offer both Botox and Dysport cosmetic injections as options to treat signs of aging. These are non-surgical treatments to rejuvenate the face and correct the appearance of frown lines, fine lines and wrinkles, and other signs of aging. Our goal is to slow the aging process, so our patients look and feel their best.

Many people prefer this treatment because of the following benefits:

  • A quick and effective procedure
  • Little to no discomfort
  • Minimal to no downtime is required
  • Natural-looking results
  • Minimally invasive approach

Candidates for Cosmetic Injectable Treatments

We use Botox and Dysport to treat a wide range of patients with moderate to severe facial lines. Any healthy male or female adult who is at least 18 years old is eligible to receive a Botox or Dysport treatment.

The following candidates are NOT eligible for treatment:

  • Pregnancy or Breastfeeding
  • History of botulinum toxin sensitivity
  • Keloidal scarring
  • Have dairy allergy
  • Have a neuromuscular disorder

As a precaution, we advise patients prior to treatment to discontinue any blood thinners, muscle relaxants, and other medications that may interact with the product. These same injections may also affect certain medications that affect the muscles, such as some anticholinergics used to treat Parkinson’s disease.

Cosmetic Injectable Treatments at The Memorial Spa

During a pre-treatment consultation, our providers will carefully assess the patient’s muscle movement and activity to determine the appropriate dosing amount. Botox or Dysport are then injected into targeted facial muscles to block certain neurotransmitters and limit their ability to contract fully. As a result, this reduces the formation of wrinkles caused by frowning, raising eyebrows, smiling, or laughing.

There is little to no discomfort during the injections as performed by our certified injectors at The Memorial Spa. However, topical numbing or ice can be used beforehand if requested by the patient.

Additionally, Botox and Dysport can be used for other medical purposes. These include:

  • Relieve muscle discomfort
  • Reduce excessive sweating
  • Reduce migraine headaches
  • Improve urinary bladder control
  • Improve eye conditions—Strabismus (lazy eye) or Blepharospasm (uncontrolled eye twitching)

After the initial consultation and reviewing the patient’s aesthetic goals and current health history, our provider will determine the appropriate treatment plan for the patient.

Alternative Treatment (Dysport)

Aside from Botox, the Memorial Spa offers another brand of neuromodulator known as Dysport. It is very similar to Botox in that it produces the same effects and is used in the same treatment areas.

The differences between Botox and Dysport are minuscule so we suggest consulting with our providers to determine which product works best for you. There are instances where one product is more appropriate for an area based on the patient’s goals. This allows for the best treatment results possible.

Dysport can treat forehead lines, as well as:

  • Worry lines
  • Frown lines
  • Brow asymmetry
  • Turned-down mouth corners
  • Chin dimpling
  • Excessive underarm sweat
  • Bruxism (teeth grinding)

Results & Recovery

You might be surprised to know that patients can return to work immediately on the same day as their Botox or Dysport injections. We ask patients to avoid lying on their backs for a minimum of 4 hours after the procedure. This will prevent the product from migrating to unwanted areas. We also recommend patients avoid engaging in strenuous activities such as exercising for at least 2 days after the procedure.

Since both Botox and Dysport are FDA-approved treatments, they are safe to administer when used correctly. Risks and complications may still occur though. These include:

  • Pain or swelling at the injection site
  • Headaches
  • Nausea
  • Sinus inflammation
  • Upper respiratory infection
  • Muscle weakness

These side effects are perfectly normal and can be attributed to the body adjusting to the product. Expect these symptoms to fade after a few days.

The results of Botox and Dysport usually appear within a few days after getting the injection. Full results are visible by 2 weeks from the day of treatment. We recommend our patients to come in for a follow-up at 2 weeks to ensure appropriate correction and to add additional units if needed.

Frequently Asked Questions About Botox & Dysport

  1. Is Dysport as good as Botox?
Dysport® and Botox® injections contain the same active ingredient, botulinum toxin. Because of this, it is possible to combine and alternate the use of both products in specific areas of the body. Dysport® is not as concentrated as Botox®, so the former provides patients with faster results. Ultimately, the choice between either product is dependent on the patient’s preference, needs, and concerns.
  2. Can you switch between Botox and Dysport?
You can safely switch from either injectable. Both products are safe and can help you and your provider determine which one works best for you and your goals.
  3. Can you mix Dysport and Botox?
Depending on your aesthetic needs and the assessment of your doctor, it is possible to use both injectables within a single treatment in specific locations of your face.
  4. Does Dysport last longer than Botox?
The results of Dysport® typically manifest sooner than Botox. However, product duration varies among patients based on dosing and how quickly the patient’s body breaks down the product over time.
  5. How many units of Botox are equal to Dysport?
One unit of Botox® is equivalent to three Dysport® units.
  6. Are Botox injections safe?
Botox injections are relatively safe, provided that they are performed by a certified provider.
  7. How long does Botox or Dysport last?
Botox and Dysport injections generally last 3-4 months. There are cases where patients see effects lasting up to 6 months and also instances where the effects only last 2 months.
  8. How many units of Botox do I need for the forehead?
Botox comes in dosages of between 50 to 100 units per vial. Some practitioners have been known to inject 10 to 30 Botox units into the forehead. Botox Cosmetic manufacturer Allergan suggests a total dosage of 20 units to cover the forehead area.
  9. How much is Botox per unit in Texas?
Botox treatment costs $15.00 per unit at The Memorial Spa in Houston. Dysport units cost $5.00 per unit.
