The skin loses its firmness and smoothness as we age. This is due to the gradual deterioration of collagen, a protein that serves as structural support for the skin.  More than treating the effects of aging, The Memorial Spa uses Sculptra® to address its underlying cause by stimulating the natural production of collagen to restore the volume and fullness of the face.

Sculptra® is an FDA-approved dermal filler that treats wrinkles and fine lines on the face. It also treats facial wasting or loss of facial fat (known as lipoatrophy), a condition that is often associated with patients who have HIV and AIDS.

Sculptra® is effective in restoring the skin’s strength and elasticity while giving the face a more defined and youthful look.

How Does Sculptra Work?

Sculptra® is made of poly-L-lactic acid, a biodegradable and Biocompatible synthetic material that can be absorbed by the body. Poly-L-lactic acid, or PLLA, is injected into the dermal layer of the skin where the body absorbs its watery part after a few days. This releases the microparticles which are the main component of PLLA. These microparticles replace the lost collagen and stimulate the formation of new ones by laying down a collagen framework.

Collagen formation increases with continuous treatments, resulting in the gradual restoration of facial volume and smoothness of the skin.

How Is The Sculptra Treatment Done?

The treatment is an outpatient procedure and can be done in 15 to 30 minutes. Compared to other dermal fillers which are in gel form, Sculptra® is injected as a suspension of microcrystal powder and sterile water.

A topical anesthetic may be applied to the treatment sites, or the suspension may be diluted with Lidocaine, a local anesthetic, to ease discomfort. Sculptra® is injected into the dermal layer of the skin using a syringe with a long and fine needle. After the injection, treated areas must be massaged to even out the distribution and to allow better absorption of the dermal filler.

The number of treatment sessions and the number of injections per treatment vary, depending on the degree of collagen loss.  Most patients will need three sessions.

What Areas Does Sculptra Treat?

Sculptra® is used to treat the following parts of the body:

  • Hollow temples
  • Bony cheekbones
  • Nasolabial folds (the area from the nose to the mouth)
  • Marionette lines
  • Jawline
  • Neck

However, Sculptra® should not be injected into frown lines, forehead lines, mouth, lips, and areas around the eyes.  The side-effects from the incorrect administration of Sculptra® in these areas can include bumps, swelling, and infections that may require surgical means to correct.

How Long Will The Results Last?

Unlike other treatments where results are observed right away, it can take between 4 to 6 weeks before the effects of Sculptra® manifest. However, it is worth the wait as results are natural and can last for up to two years, requiring only one retreatment per year for maintenance.
