What Is The Difference Between A Buttock Lift, Butt Implants, And A Brazilian Butt Lift?

The appearance of the butt can often be a sore topic for people to talk about. Some may view their buttocks as flat while others find their buttocks saggy because of weight loss or aging. This may appear as a loss of excess skin tissue of the muscles of the buttocks, resulting in poor definition, even with clothes on.

As we age and our skin loses elasticity, this can cause our buttocks to sag. Other reasons include a lack of exercise and long hours spent in the same posture which is what many office workers suffer from. Genetics also factor into our body shape and could contribute to unhappiness with the natural shape of our bottom.

The muscle mass around the butt is known as your glutes, and well-developed glutes resemble a heart shape. The mass at the top creates a curve while the shape narrows as they go down to the legs. Glutes that have wasted away give the appearance of an upside-down heart as the bottom appears bigger behind your legs than around the hips.

One problem that we should spend more time preventing is disappearing butt syndrome (DBS). Without intervention, DBS is inevitable as we lose muscle as we age. Muscle loss or atrophy due to aging is called sarcopenia.

After the age of 50, the rate of sarcopenia is 1-2% per year. Everyone loses muscle all over the body but it is most noticeable around your bum, hips, and shoulders because these are the areas that hold your shape and accentuate your frame. They provide padding for your skeleton.

Four Different Butt Shapes

There are four common butt shapes that bbl patients opt for. We have an article that can guide you to a decision for your prospect butt shape and which celebrities have them.

What Are The Surgical Solutions?

While it’s true that you can improve your butt’s profile courtesy of squats, lunges, leg lifts, and glute bridges, are you really going to take the time to do so? On top of that, even if you do, there is no guarantee that you will have the firm booty that you’ve dreamed of. Your genetics and the fat reserves that are already there will be a factor.

Direct Butt Lift

Individuals who have experienced a loss of buttock volume and/or tone are best suited for a buttock lift procedure. Also called a gluteal lift, this also pertains to the development of loose, excess skin in that region.

Factors that play a role in causing sagging of the buttocks are aging, significant weight fluctuations, sun exposure, and genetics. Buttock lift surgery will see our board-certified surgeons making an incision along the upper contour of the buttocks. This allows them to lift the buttocks, remove excess skin, and create smoother tighter contours.

Individuals who want additional volume may combine a buttock lift with fat transfers to create more projection while enhancing shape. A butt lift can also be a viable option for people who want to remove unwanted, sagging skin and tissue while tightening up the appearance of the buttocks.

While a butt lift does not provide more volume to the buttocks, it instead creates a relatively more pleasing shape and smooths out dimpled skin.

Butt Implants

Both gel and firm silicone implants are used for buttock implants. Depending on an individual’s shape and the result they may want to achieve, these can also be standard implants or customized. During a consultation with the surgeon, you need to thoroughly discuss your desired look because this will affect implant choice as well as implant placement.

Once you are given general anesthesia, your surgeon will proceed to place the implants within the gluteal muscles. While every doctor has a preferred method of insertion and placement, they put them into or below the muscle.

The implants are placed inside your gluteus (butt) muscles to lower the risk of damage to your sciatic nerve. Otherwise, there could be neuropathic pain and problems with the muscles in your back and thigh. Unfortunately, this method might result in the butt implant sticking out more because it is not embedded as deep as those placed below the gluteus.
Because this qualifies as major surgery, certain risks including major scarring and implant-related infection are present for butt implants. There are cases when a person’s body rejects the implants, resulting in subsequent surgery to remove them. The implants may also shift out of position requiring surgery to correct it.

Brazilian Butt Lift

When discussing the Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL) procedure, we refer to a specialized fat transfer procedure that augments the shape and size of the buttocks without the use of implants. Liposuction is done to remove excess fat from the hips, abdomen, lower back, or thighs. A portion of that excess fat is strategically injected into the buttocks.

BBL surgery is a gluteal fat grafting procedure where buttock volume and projection are added to achieve the perfect overall shape or symmetry of the buttocks. Individuals who have good to moderate skin elasticity and adequate fat to accomplish the transfers are typically most suited for a BBL procedure.

It can consistently create smooth, toned, lifted, and shapely results that are balanced with the overall figure. Beginning with liposuction from either the abdomen, flanks, back, arms, or thighs, the surgeon performing the BBL surgery then injects the removed fat into the hips and buttocks.

Since silicone implants are fairly rigid and confined, your curves likely will not look or feel as natural as your butt following a Brazilian Butt Lift procedure. Also, BBL surgery avoids the potential issues of placing a foreign device (implant) in your body.

Choose Only The Best In BBL

Like any surgical procedure, BBL surgery comes with certain risks involved. These risks are specific to the anatomical region where the fat is injected. There are a lot of blood vessels in the buttocks and untrained surgeons can easily have fat enter the bloodstream and clog major blood vessels.

The board-certified plastic surgeons of Memorial Plastic Surgery perform over 500 successful Brazilian Butt Lift surgeries on a yearly basis. As leading BBL experts in Houston and Clear Lake, Dr. Patrick Hsu, Dr. Kendall Roehl, and Dr. Vasileios Vasilakis attract patients from all over the world for this procedure. Their track record of exceptional results and meticulous attention to detail have established Memorial Plastic Surgery as one of the leading clinics in Texas offering BBL.
