There has been a rise in plastic surgery procedures among men, especially the surgery called liposuction. This increase is likely due to the fact that more men are becoming aware of the benefits of cosmetic procedures.

Usually, when we think of plastic surgery we think of women having breast procedures, or aging actresses having a facelift performed. And even though men do have procedures such as liposuction, nose surgery, and abdominoplasty, we still tend to think of cosmetic surgery as a medical treatment for women. In recent years, there has been an increase in the number of abdominoplasty surgeries for men. When a man reaches a certain age a spare tire around the middle becomes increasingly difficult to reduce through conventional dieting and exercise. Since there has been an increasing number of men in middle age having gone through a divorce, they may find themselves back in the single world trying to date. Guys are like anyone; they want to look their best, especially to the opposite sex.

Since diet and exercise don’t seem to work for a lot of men, they are seeking outside help. The liposuction procedure is a great way to eliminate fat around your abdomen. It is a safe and effective surgery that is performed hundreds of thousands of times each year. The plastic surgeon performing the procedure uses it to sculpt and contour a shapely physique. One of the reasons for the uptake in the number of men having the surgery is that it has become widely available and isn’t as expensive as it once was. This puts it within reach of the average Joe.

Statement from the Chief of plastic, cosmetic and reconstruction surgery at Memorial Plastic Surgery in Houston, Texas if he has noticed an upswing in the number of male patients having liposuction. Dr. Hsu reports, “Yes I have, in fact, I have seen an increase in overall cosmetic procedures, not just liposuction. I think that men realize that they can enhance or augment their appearance easily and safely, and they want to look their best.” The doctor also stated, “liposuction is a relatively non-invasive procedure and can be performed on an outpatient basis, and this is appealing to many men who are busy and don’t have the time for an extended hospital stay. Also, there is a wider understanding of the male population about the benefits of plastic surgery.”

There has been an overall increase in plastic surgery among the general population of the United States. It is interesting to follow the rise in procedures for men. As the surgeries are refined and the prices go down, it is safe to assume that, at some point, it may be close to an even split between the genders having surgery. Right now it is still mostly women who are going under the knife, but that is changing every day.
